The problem
Road hazards could be difficult to report, locate, classify, and pass to the people responsible for responding.
What I learned from the existing workflow
- Residents create reports, while administrators review them and plan an appropriate response.
- Each report combines a photo, location, and hazard details supplied from a phone.
- Separate reporting channels and manual review can slow awareness and classification.
- The capstone needed to demonstrate a broad vision within an academic budget and schedule.
The solution
I reduced reporting to a focused mobile flow that combines a compressed photo, location, and hazard details. Each submission appears in a separate administrative view, where reports can be located and reviewed, while the prototype can suggest the type of hazard shown.
Key decisions
- Separate resident and administrator views Each group sees only the actions needed for its part of the process.
- Make location part of every report A report becomes more actionable when responders can immediately see where it happened.
- Compress photos before upload Smaller files make reporting quicker and more practical on mobile connections.
Result
Delivered a working demonstration in which residents could submit a photo and location in under a minute while administrators received new hazard reports on a map for review.
What I learned
This collaboration reinforced the importance of reducing a large project idea into a clear demonstration. The goal was not to imply a citywide deployment, but to make the proposed workflow tangible and testable.
